Museum Treasure

Explorers Gallery, Torquay Museum

A creative approach to exploration juxtaposes objects, old and new, and challenges visitors preconceptions of what exploration is. The gallery is the main showpiece of the museum and features objects and artefacts collected by explorers, travellers, scholars and enthusiasts connected with Torquay during their travels around the globe. Many of these objects have found their way into the museum archive over the last century and a half and are being shown to the public for the first time. A short film explores the lives of Richard Burton, Agatha Christie and Lt Col Percy Harrison Fawcett among others and reveals how we are explorers in our own way.
